Subconscious Mind - The Depths of the Subconscious Mind Revealed

The depths of the subconscious mind are not something to take lightly. This internal component of our being is extremely important to us on a daily basis.

Beliefs stored in the subconscious mind have a significant impact on how successful you are at anything you attempt.

Dr. Schaller, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia, states “once covertly activated, an unconscious goal persists with the same determination that is evident in our conscious pursuits.

Sometimes nonconscious effects can be bigger in sheer magnitude than conscious ones, because we can’t moderate stuff we don’t have conscious access to, and the goal stays active.”

The subconscious part of the mind is below the normal operation mode of consciousness in our minds.

This part of the brain works to record various experiences that we encounter in our lives. This component of the mind has been said to be fully aware of all the things that the conscious mind is experiencing, while the conscious mind holds only about 7 pieces of information in short-term memory.

Everything you have ever read, heard, thought or imagined is held within the subconscious mind.

The subconscious mind has long been a source of curiosity and research. Today, we know that the subconscious mind is one of the most powerful forces in our mind and it operates without us being aware of it.

Research has also shown that our subconscious has the ability to affect our behaviors in ways we can’t imagine.

Proof the Subconscious Exists

Psychologists like Freud and Jung believed in the existence of the subconscious but once their ideas fell out of favor so did research on the subconscious. However, there is evidence that the subconscious is part of our brains and does impact our lives.

For example, there are cases of brain damaged people who can tell you something, and then immediately after saying it, are not able to orally repeat what they just told you. However, they are able to write it down. This is referred to as oral/verbal dissociation.

Clearly, the subconscious mind allows them to know what they said even if they cannot repeat the words verbally.

In addition, a study conducted by Yale showed that people's opinions about a stranger they just met were altered by a single cup of coffee.

The study participants, who were college students, didn't have the slightest clue their social instincts were being tested.

They were interrupted on the way to the laboratory by a person holding a bunch of books, papers and a cup of either hot or iced coffee. They were then asked for a helping hand to hold the cup.

And that was all it took to alter the judgements of that person. Study participants who were asked to hold the iced coffee rated the person as being much colder, less social and more selfish than the participants who had, just for a moment, help the cup of hot coffee.

Another study shows people are more cooperative if they catch a glimpse of words such as "dependable” and “support”, even if they were never aware of seeing the words and don't remember what prompted them to start being more helpful.

Peak Period for the Subconscious Mind

Most do not realize it, but there is actually a period of time in a person’s life that is considered the “peak” of the subconscious mind. This is the period from birth to right around the age of six.

Psychologists and other professionals who focus on the health and studying the mind agree these are the years in which this part of the mind is shaped.

By the time we reach the age of six, we have watched those around us closely and have started to reflect some of the same behavior, speech patterns, beliefs, and personality traits. Ultimately, this means your mind is actually a collaboration of the people you are around during this time frame.

Recent Research on the Subconscious

The subconscious has been the focus of recent studies like the one published in 2007 at Yale University. According to the research, people’s opinions of individuals they don’t know was affected by whether or not the stranger asked them to hold a cup of iced or hot coffee.

Other research has shown our minds can trigger automatic reactions to stimuli such as the smell of cleaning solution or words like “dependable.”

The effect is known as priming. Basically, it means our subconscious minds can trigger our behavior based on these deeply impended effects.

Purpose of the Subconscious

Scientists today believe our subconscious minds play two vital roles in our daily lives. This part of our mind stores all of the information we need that helps us solve problems.

For example, if you’re watching a trivia show and the answer to a question pops into your head without you being aware of where the knowledge came from, that’s your subconscious mind at work.

The second role our subconscious can play in our lives is that we can use it to help ourselves become better and feel better about ourselves. As the previous research has illustrated, our subconscious minds can trigger a wide range of behaviors thanks to training that we are not even aware of.

Imagine the possibilities that could exist if you harness the power of your subconscious mind to generate desirable behaviors in yourself.

2. Affirmations – Affirmations are statements that convince an individual that something is “true”, or “factual”. It is a judgment with a positive tone.

3. Visualization - An idea that emerged from sports psychology. Athletes call the visualization process “mental rehearsal,” and they have been using it since the 1960s when the U.S. learned about it from the Russians.

4. Hypnosis – This is a tactic that is used to put a person in a near-sleep like trance, and then suggestions are issued to that person in order to achieve a certain goal.

An example of where this would work is it a person lacks confidence in their professional abilities. The individual conducting the hypnosis session would offer the subject affirmations that lead them to believe that they are successful in their professional lives.
